Accessing the Internet on Caravan and Camping Sites

Many devices now come with wi-fi internet access enabled and can be used to access the internet wherever you are, providing a wi-fi service is within range, so which device is most practical when it comes to holidaying in your caravan or motorhome?

PCs and laptop computers

The most obvious way to connect to the internet is via your PC or laptop. They provide the largest viewable screen and have easily adjustable resolution meaning you can view most websites at their optimum appearance. However, these are also very large and take up a considerable amount of space in your ‘van, not to mention adding to the overall weight. They may also pose a security risk as they are not easily hidden out of sight, giving would-be thieves a reason to break in to your caravan or motorhome.

Mobile phones

At the other end of the scale in terms of size, there are mobile phones with internet access. These provide an extremely portable way to go on line and check your emails and lots of people already have one. Some websites provide a mobile friendly version of their website so that viewing online is easier on a smaller screen, however, most websites do not. Depending on the mobile phone you have, you may find viewing websites and finding the information you need very difficult on the small screen.

Games consoles and MP3 players

As a compromise you could consider using your games console or MP3 player to access the internet. This feature is available on most up to date video games consoles and mp3 players at the higher end of the market. If you take the children on caravan and motorhome holidays, you’ll probably be packing a video games console to keep them amused should the weather become changeable, so how about negotiating some time to check your emails?

If you’re planning on accessing the internet whilst on your Caravan Park, it’s worth phoning ahead to see whether wi-fi access is available on your chosen site and whether any charges will be made.

If you’re new to accessing the internet other than on your PC at home, dig out your instruction manual for your phone or games console before you set off and familiarise yourself with how the internet access works.

If you’re still unsure, the manufacturer or phone company should have a helpline with trained advisers. Failing that – ask the kids!

Don’t forget that all high-value, high-risk items need to be covered on your household insurance policy, and that they should be covered when removed from the home, as it is unlikely that they will be covered on your caravan or motorhome insurance.
